How did we choose the name and can it be changed?

The name represents all of our themes and consequently its a bit long! The abbreviation Association Essential Emergency Critical Care Nursing in the Gambia (AEECCNG) has a unique footprint on the internet and so it shows up first time on any search! We will consider everything to do with our new association over the next couple of months, including a name change. Similarly, we wouldn't register with the African Federation Critical Care Nurses until members have had a chance to think about the name and title.

Who has set up this Association and why?

Mr Alhagie m.m Baldeh a Registered Nurse and Nurse Anesthetist by Profession has been nominated and supported by David Muir, who is an Ambassador for the African Federation of Critical Care Nurses (AFCCN) and a champion of Essential Emergency Critical Care (EECC). Alhagie has been chosen to be the President-elect because he is a pro-active and motivted heath care professional and clinician. When I met Alhagie in 2020 and 2021 he had many good ideas and wanted to improve the standard of healthcare in the Gambia.

Gambian nurses are highly motivated and deserve wider representation and Alhagie MM has been chosen to be the President-elect because he is an enthusiast for the Essential Emergency and Critical Care concept and is a member of the to be established in the Gambia. When I met Alhagie in 2020 and 2021 he had many good ideas and wanted to improve the standard of healthcare in the Gambia.

 good work to be highlighted. David will give Alhagie MM Baldehh support and mentorship to develop the (AEECCNG) from May 202-2025. As soon as we become a cohesive group of >25 members we can apply to the AFCCN for full membership.

Once the AEECCNG is affiliated to the AFCCN we will follow-up by requesting to join the World Federation Critical Care Nurses. This will enable members to have access to professional information and makes ICU that the Gambia will  become involved in decision-making and policies that may affect their professional status. We intend to set up workshops in November in the Gambia to enable members to gain knowledge and gain benefits for their membership.

By establing an Association that is affiliated with pan-African and World wide organisations, the AEECCNG will be able to raise funds and seek sponsorship. Many organistions such as the World Health Organisation are interested in this association and opportunities for professional development will be available through the Association.

Alhagies’s main interest is in Emergency and Critical Care. He is a co-author of a  textbook ‘Critical Care Nursing and Essential Emergency Critical Care in low-resource environments’. The book is scheduled for a print run in November 2024 and all members of the AEEECC will receive a free copy of the book.

 

Essential Emergency Critical Care is an exciting development that believes critical care is needed all over the world and it doesn’t have to be expensive. EECC has a fundamental approach to hospital care and research has shown that an episode of critical care could cost the same amount of money to do a Ceaserean section.

The Gambia

The Gambia has a small number of critical care beds and is a low-resource environment. Officially 8  ICU beds are available at the Edward Francis Small  Teaching Hospital (EFSTH). Although they are classed as ICU beds they don't meet interntional standards and they work within a cramped and small ICU. The EFSTH Website www.efsth.gm is not working at the moment.

What sort of professional development will happen within the AEECCNG?

Essential Emergency Critical Care relies on Nurses to maintain a 24 hour presence and to care for the patient. Many Registered Nurses have a BSc and have a grounding in the life sciences and communication and organisational expertise. Task shifting is common amongst nursing staff in the Gambia and scope of practice and role extension are assimillated into the role of the nurse. A crucial role extension is the Nurse Anaethetist who do advanced training to enable them to provide the majority of general anaesthetics that take place in the Gambia.

Breaking News

Sereh Sanneh has accepted the role of vice-president of the AEECCNG and Joseph Mendy will be the Secretary General. These are both crucial roles in a new association. There willl be more information soon.

The registration of AEECCNG is taking place and the AEECCNG will be proud to be a leading Gambian Association with full credentials.

The Gambia is the smallest country in Africa but the critical care nurses intend to have the best website and an innovative and sustainable training proforma.

 I worked / taught Alhagie MM Baldeh for short periods in 2022. I had the impression straightaway that he would be a great clinical educator and a good clinician. I'm pleased to report that the President of the AEECCNG puts education above everything and is very keen to set up teaching sessions.
